About Our Residency        Faculty        The College of Medicine            Home
We offer a university-based  internal medicine residency program emphasizing a general internal medicine approach to patient care and teaching.

There are good reasons why aspiring internists choose to train here:

  • A "Right-Sized" Program Our program is large enough for you to enjoy good peer interaction and stimulation, yet small enough for you to get to know yourinternal medicine residency at University of Illinois at Peoria colleagues. People here are friendly, value teamwork, and support one another. Faculty are accessible, supportive, and committed to your education. You will be respected and your contributions will be appreciated.

  • A Pro-Resident Learning Environment Because our hospitals provide outstanding ancillary and support services, you will be able to focus on learning. You will also have an opportunity to participate in our M.P.H. program as a resident.

  • An Outstanding Patient Base for Learning
Our medical community provides primary and tertiary care to a large central population. We are based at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, the largest hospital in downstate Illinois. The hospital is a Level I Trauma Center with a Life Flight Helicopter Program, and a variety of large specialty programs, including transplant and stroke. As a consequence, you will work with an unusually diverse patient group. When you complete your program, you will be well prepared to meet the clinical demands of your specialty or to begin sub-specialty training.

  • State-of-the-Art Medicine
You will benefit from the learning opportunities presented by a progressive medical community which utilizes advanced medical technology such as PET scanners, digital imaging systems, a comprehensive integrated electronic medical record, and surgical gamma knives.

  • Training that will prepare you for sub-specialty training or general internal medicine practice
One of our recent graduates put it this way: "After one month of being a fellow, I started comparing the training I received in Peoria to the training of residents at my fellowship. It was then that I realized that the training I received in Peoria was exceptional. I was able to blow away some attendings here with the knowledge I had gained in Peoria.... I would recommend the Internal Medicine residency at Peoria to anyone interested in becoming an internist whether that is in primary care or a subspecialty."

  • An Attractive Salary and Benefits Package
You will receive a very competitive salary and benefits. Details are included on this site.
  • Furthermore, the cost of living in Peoria is significantly less than many other cities you might train in. For example, the cost of living in Chicago is approximately 24% higher than in Peoria. (Click here to compare your salary and cost of living in Peoria to other cities you might be considering. We think you'll be pleasantly surprised.)

  • A Very Livable Community (See sidebar)
Peoria is an affordable, family-oriented, mid-sized city that offers you a good quality of life. We have excellent public and private schools, and a wealth of educational, cultural, recreational, and spouse-employment opportunities. Housing is reasonably priced and available. Traffic is light, and things are close at hand.

We think this is a great place to learn the art, science, and practice of Internal Medicine. We invite you to visit the rest of our site and find out more for yourself.

Internal Medicine Residency - Peoria

Peoria will surprise you.

Located halfway between Chicago and St. Louis on the shores of the beautiful Illinois River, Peoria combines the advantages of big city living with the charm of a small town.

The metro area includes nearly 350,000 residents and is the cultural, medical and retail center of downstate Illinois. It is the worldwide headquarters of Caterpillar, Inc., and home to Bradley University, which ranked 6th among Midwestern comprehensive universities in the 2008 edition of "America's Best Colleges," published by U.S. News & World Report.

Peoria has many of the amenities you find in large cities, including a symphony orchestra, professional theatre companies, a ballet troupe, professional sports, and a civic center, where national acts perform nearly every week.

Peoria is also notable for what you won't find. Like long commutes, high crime rates, or a high cost of living. All this, along with solid Midwestern values, makes Peoria a family-friendly place to live.

(We think it's also a great place to learn and practice medicine!)
